Holiday Ireland
24/Oct - 7/Nov - 2015

Part Five | Part One - Part Two - Part Three - Part Four

During our Holiday in Ireland we only pre-booked the Kilbeggan Distillery. Along the way it turned out we came across more opportunities with regards to Whiskey related topics. I was fortunate enough that we could include them in our travel schedule.

The Tullamore D.E.W.
06th of Nov 2015

On our way from the town of Killarney to the town of Tullamore we came across the brand new Tullamore D.E.W. Distillery. At the moment there are no visitor tours given at this location. But our taxi driver told us that the people of Tullamore were happy to have the Distillery back in town and was convinced there would be tours available in the future.

After we visited the Kilbeggan Distillery we left our car at the B&B and took the taxi into Tullamore where I visited the Bonded Warehouse. This was the location where the Spirit and Whiskey was stored until the duty was paid and all was cleared. In this warehouse the Tullamore D.E.W. Experience is located as the previous actual Distillery was located far outside Tullamore.

In the souvenir shop you can buy your ticket for the tour. You start with a short presentation about the Tullamore D.E.W. history. It also gives you a short insight in the brand new distillery on the top half of this page.

Then you walk into a make believe kiln to start your tour about the Whiskey making process. Once outside you will be presented with the ingredients; Maize, Malted and Unmalted barley. Depending on the Tullamore D.E.W. Expression one or more of these ingredients are used.

Following the tour the next steps of the distillation process are displayed and explained. All is supported by short video presentations. For those who are not comfortable with the English language there are audio guides in other languages available to support the videos.

A fun thing to see was the [very] old style bottle filling machine. Bottles where filled by gravity once it was activated by a little suction {hips}.

And then it was again time for the mandatory tasting of the product. Nice detail is that the Warehouse Reserve is only available at the Souvenir Shop. While you are sipping on your complimentary drams you can have a look at a big cabinet with all sort of Tullamore Dew Expressions. From my local liqor store[s] I was not aware that there were so many expressions of Tullamore D.E.W..

After the tour I found my girlfriend in the bar where we had another drink. After a short visit to the well decorated toilet area it was time for dinner.

The next morning we drove the car back to Dublin to take the plane back home.
